Program Description

How do you define evil? Are only humans capable of it or does evil exist in nature? Is there such a thing as sin? And what does any of this have to do with evolution? Questions like these get particularly interesting when a scientist and a theologian collaborate on the answers. Martinez Hewlett and Ted Peters explore the facts and the ideology that surround questions of good versus evil, competition versus cooperation, nature versus nurture. The coming together of science and theology may be at the core of a new model of cooperation. Peters puts it this way: “The grandeur and the magnificence of the universe is overwhelming to the human mind. Science must treat this neutrally, that is to say without value. But the theologian can’t treat it without value. God loves this world. This is precious to God. And somehow or other the valueless and the value laden need to be brought together.”

Martinez Hewlett Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus in the departments of medicine and molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Theology and Science. Ted Peters Th.D. is a professor of systematic theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He is the editor of Dialog: A Journal of Theology, and co-editor of Theology and Science. Drs. Hewlett and Peters are co-authors of Evolution From Creation to New Creation (Abingdon Press 2003) and Can You Believe in God and Evolution? A Guide for the Perplexed (Abingdon Press 2006).
