Program Description: We have all heard jokes based on the affects of the female hormone cycle on women's behavior. Yet women know these symptoms are not always a laughing matter. Jed Diamond, a licensed psychotherapist who has worked with men's health issues for thirty-five years, is concerned about the decline in men's health. He began to recognize constellations of symptoms in his male clients that led him to suspect this pattern of physical, behavioral and emotional disorders might be hormonally related. Later research supported his clinical observations and led to the recognition of what he calls, Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS). Diamond says, "We've only recently come to recognize that men also have a hormonal based change of life that affects all other aspects of our lives - psychology, interpersonal relationships, sexuality, and spirituality." Diamond describes the importance of raising male children to become strong healthy men in a way in which they again feel connected to the earth, to the spiritual world, to themselves and to their important roles in society as men, and how that will benefit the individuals, society and the planet.
Jed Diamond is active internationally in the scientific understanding and treatment of men's health issues. He is the founding director of the health program, MenAlive, and is the author of seven books on men's health including Surviving Male Menopause: A Guide For Women and Men (Sourcebooks, Inc. 2000) and The Irritable Male Syndrome: Managing The Four Causes of Depression and Aggression (Rodale Books 2004).
